Gibson Ripper Bass Gutiar

Photos of a Gibson bass guitar I sold on Ebay

Serial Number 00157360

Manufactured in the USA in 1976

The Gibson Ripper Bass Guitar holds it's own unique style and is distinctive for both it's looks and it's thunderous sound! These are pretty hard to come by these days (especially in the UK) as not very many were sold at the original time of manufacture thanks to their very high price compared to the rest of the basses on the market.

The condition of this bass guitar is quite frankly awesome, I've seen a few of these now and have never seen one that compares to this one. The painwork has a very deep shine that under certain light appears dark blue (see photos below). There a few knocks and bangs but they are all very superficial and shallow.

I personally imported this lovely bass from America and I have never gigged it myself, I have taken it to a couple of gigs as a spare but have never needed to use it. It's absolutley gorgeous but alas I can't justify keeping something like this just to drool over, so it's time for it to find a good home.

Guitar Setup
I have recently (a few days ago) had this bass inspected and professionally setup by none other than Mark Harwood at Springvale Studios, and he REALLY knows his stuff! The action on this Ripper is really nice, it suits pretty much all playing styles. Mark also gave the bass a sympathetic clean, which has made it look lurvely! The intonation has been declared as being perfect, however I've found with selling guitars on Ebay that intonation can be a matter of taste so I'm not giving this intonation as a 100% guarantee.

The action is set really low, which suits most styles with no fret buzz

And here's me in some funky trousers grimacing a bit because I don't really want to let this lovely Ripper go, it was made the year I was born!

Ripper Body

The very light scuff marks are in the same place you would expect to see them on any vintage bass

It's very rare for a Gibson Ripper to have the original bridge intact as most players removed them, which makes this bass all the more unique and collectable

I've taken this photo in a certain way to EMPHASISE the buckle rash, it doesn't look anywhere near as harsh in real life

The case is included in the auction, it's seen a bit of life but all the catches work just fine

The condition of the pink fluffy lining inside the case is fantastic, it's my guess that for the majority of this gutiars life it has lived in the case!

I've included this photo to show just how deep the shine of the finish stull is, look how clearly you can see those clouds!

The original control knobs, including the 'chicken head' pickup selector

The is comparitively little damage to the front horn

Just to show you how straight and true the neck is

The marks on the neck here are my fingerprints, proof positive of how good the finish is!

Minor scuffs on bottom strap button

Where the strings go in!

It's been really hard trying to take a photo to show you how the deep paint finish looks dark greeny blue in bright sunlight, but I think I just about captured it here.

UPDATE 9th June 2008

Amazingly I've just had an email from a chap called Daniel Reene, he was bought this very guitar as an 18th birthday present. In much the same way was I feel about my MusicMan he has said he will never part with this bass, and I can't say I blame him!

Here are some photos he kindly sent of himself what is now HIS Gibson Ripper;
